59 percent of engineering doctorates awarded in the United States went to foreigners. I dont get it. Are US scientist turning in Bigots ? Afraid of immigrants working side by side with us ? Fermi, Einstein, Von Braun, etc. came from other countries. This is the USA afterall, a country of immigrants, "The Great Melting Pot". |

agreed, we shouldn't let US science slip but scientific discoveries usually help out everyone in the world regardless of who made the discovery.

no, they are not. the issue is that US schools do not produce people capable or interested in science. the k-12 school system is thoroughly busted. i was born and educated outside of the US and we started on algebra and geometry in the 5th grade. ditto for geography, etc. physics and chemistry started in 7th grade. in my son's there was a girl in a freshman year in applied physics and she was a valedictorian and never had a single year of physics. and that's Rensselaer! |

Perhaps if the government was less worried about offending people with bad grades, they might actually get into teaching the more advanced concepts.

Maybe if they were less concerned with grades in general and more concerned with having people learn. Instead of having teachers teach for a test, teachers should be teaching to educate, inspire, and direct young people in the areas they can do well in (though I agree that everyone needs other classes as well to broaden perspectives and produce applications).
In short, as has been said previously, education needs to be more individualized (though tests are still needed in order to show a person is sufficiently competent in a particular area to proceed in it under another, more advanced, teacher); this would improve education in general which would include, but not be limited to, math and science. |

I don't think this clown was really talking about schools(more money won't fix that either). He's simply not smart enough to create a product that makes money. He wants a check that is automatically dispensed to him by the government. If you study faux science e.g. human caused global warming, than you must get a check from the govt.(or maybe the Heinz foundation).

Surely Nobel prises are only the manisfestation of opinions of a small group of individuals, rather like a referees opinion at a football match. They should be a prize not a goal. Nobels are already being anticipated by the LHC teams before the serious work even starts, What a cheek.
