does time dialation occur because you are traveling fast, or because you are a great distance away from the observer with the clock thats measuring you?

Distance doesn't matter. A train traveling at relativistc speeds will see the stations clock running fast regardless of its position.

Correct

Ahem, you mean it will see the station's clocks running SLOW, right?
It is difficult to get relativity correct. Even the simple stuff.

There is no reciprocity pupa.

Why should there be?

Time dilation is symmetric (see RC Tolman: Relativity, Thermodynamics ad Cosmology page 24 for example). Laws of physics tend to be symmetric.
There is no such thing as time contraction , even if you just invented it two posts ago.

Relativity is not about the reciprocal appearance of time slow down. To the one time slows down for the other's clock will be seen to go fast. Therefore there is no paradox.

Paradox is used to intimidate the layman out of his common sense.
Sorry Einstein but physics is not about "appearances."

Looks like you also invented your own brand of relativity. How about reading a book?

This is relativity refined. Einstein simply went too far with his principle. This is symptomatic of being one of the first in a young science.

Nick,

Pupamancur knows his stuff. However much you reject it now .. go back over it and consider the possibility that Einstein (Pupamancur is simply reporting) might actually be right and maybe there is an eensy teensy possibilty that Nick might not fully understand what is already known (this goes for myself as well).

He doesn't know enough.

Show how a fast moving clock will see a slow moving clock run slow. Only one can move slower than the other.

"Pupanmancur" does know. You do not understand the basics of time dilation . Don't feel bad, many others don't, it is a common mistake. Reading that one page from Tolman might clear it for you. If that doesn't, nothing will. (while you are at it, read the next page, on symmetrical length contraction).

There was a famous crackpot, his name is Herbert Dingle, he wrote on this subject for years. Look him up, he's quite interesting. He died not understanding the symmetry of time dilation.
