After looking at topo maps of the area, it appears that the Bighorns might easily have been part of the Rocky Mountains surrounding current day Yellowstone park. It appears that there might be an ancient rift which caused the basin between these now distant ranges. The rift might have opened just east and adjacent to Heart mountain, causing it to drift westward with the Rockies. |
