I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of a Technological singularity completely, even if you cant bring yourself to believe it can happen its still interesting to know about it.

The tip-off is "Live Forever". The idea that we know enough about the mind to help it is pure nonsense. And the idea of living forever is nonsense, too. Read "Structure of
Matter, Structure of Mind" by William L. Abler (Bainbridge, 2005). It shows that the human mind has its foundations in first principles, and we may never know all about it.

The DNA that controled your body structure before birth,
was a finite amount of information.

A human is not an astonishing marvel, it is a fleeting dream. One drop of blood in a cold ocean is all that we were.

The singulairy is near, and immortality is also near. Once the SAIs equal the human brain, they will quickly surpass it. Once we are nearly done reverse engineering the human body, we will begin to upgrade it. Etc.

The Singularity will only occur if people work towards it.

It's a mathematical fact that immortality is possible. And if one accepts that aging and death are rooted in natural causes, then those natural causes can be eliminated by mental effort.

I would rather die than live in a machine forever. What is the point of living forever if you can't live as a human? Sure some people will take this road if it is available, but does he really suggest that everyone would do it? This whole idea would only lead to a split in humanity, and then the split would lead to war, and we all know who would win. Is this really what we want?

Your body IS a machine. It is a system built out of biomatter.

With DNA repair, you could live forever and stay just as human as ever.

There already is a split in humanity. There are very smart and very stupid people -- each human. Various Christian and Islamic fundamentalist groups believe that everyone who is not a member of their group will be killed by God in some sort of future event. This sort of illogical extremism comes from insecurity, fallibility and deficiency in the fields of understanding and the ability to handle facts.

There are already people of upper and lower class. There are already strong and weak. Strength or intelligence -- it itself -- does not automatically spell the assult upon the lesser. What causes war is the intollerance of narrow minded masses and violant leaders. Violance itself is part of our genetic makeup/instinct, and this violance does not need to be added to/programmed into any sort of superhuman construct.

If evil does come from superadvanced technology, the people that are using this will be the ones to blame. (Example: An atomic power plant vs an atomic bomb. Technology can be used in many ways.)

If humans were not violent -- then their tools and inventions would not be violent.

As a person who would like to see death defeated, I fully support your right to not live forever if you don't want to. I think that downloading into a machine would be a gradual process, and only done if there was a perceived benefit.

I think we should cure aging, though, so that we can keep our 'meat machines' as long as possible. I don't want any hiccups when we move to augment ourselves!

To me the question is not if we someday humans will be able to live forever because that's a matter of time (how long, I'm not sure)...but the challenge will always be our quality of life...if you can have great quality of life would you want to go?

Apparently with medical technologies where they are today and at how fast they're advancing, the first person to live to be 1000 has already been born.
