I read an article on the success of acupuncture in reliving symptoms associated with cancer. The bottom line was that even though studies showed benefits, there was no known mechanism to explain why. I'm inclined to think it's the placebo effect. It would be interesting to see a study on the effects of barking at the moon on disease symptoms.

This article in Scientific American suggests placebos may work even if you don't believe in them:-

Placebos seem to work through moderation of the body’s neuroregulatory processes. Given that some pharmaceutical treatments use the same approach, and at times with no better understanding, placebos such as acupuncture, faith healing, or folk remedies can be considered in some cases equally as effective, only not necessarily for their traditionally stated explanations. Understanding the physiologic mechanism of placebos will no doubt lead to more effective treatment of the conditions they affect.

Sham acupuncture is better than “true” acupuncture!
