hey everyone. im really new here. i have to write an essay at for school. its a cross ciricular essay showing how physics and chemistry relate though automobiles.ive choosen 3 topics to illustrate this.:

how catalytic converters work, how a car engine works ,and how a car battery works

i cant seem to figure out how physics relates to catalytic converters, or car batteries. for a car engine, i know that the combustion inside the engine causes parts of the engine such as the pistons to move, but does physics relate any other way?

any help is appreciated. Thx alot.

Catalytic converters, (surface-based ion exchange), and batteries, (solution-based ion exchange), are both good examples of the physics in chemistry.

Look up those things, and come back if you need more help! smile.gif

For catalytic converters, I would get down to the molecular level to talk about the role platinum plays in the process, including the way it is shaped/placed in the catalytic converter, maybe look at the movement of the exhaust gasses through the converter. For the engine I would be thinking about friction, chemistry of oil, heat transfer and the cooling system/antifreeze, along with the combustion process and its byproducts. Just some thoughts.

i still just dont understand how physics relate to car batteries, cata- converters, and car engines. like, i know they do, but im having trouble finding specific examples for this essay. its a grade 11 chemistry cross ciricular essay.

i know in a catalytic converter, that decomposition occurs, to break the the atoms and i know that in a car battery, electrolyte is used which is also chemistry, and i know in car engines, combustion occurs, which is a chemical reaction. but i just dont see how physics fits into all of this.

physics is about abstract modeling of a real world system.

Q1 why oil? why gasoline? why catalytic converters? why batteries?
Q2 why pressure and tempurature? why the mathematics?
Q4 what is the physical environment surrounding this model?
Q5 what physical assumptions and constrains are placed on the model?
