Dr. Gerald Maher, the N.E. Patriots head and neck specialist, has theorized a connection between force energy transfer through the mandible to the skull base. A player becomes more susceptible to concussion if a derangement of the jaw joint cartilage is present. That diagnosis is done through and evaluation of the ear canal. The force trauma delivered to the ear canal is a result of the transfer of energy from the helmet through the chin strap and then the mandible. The Newtonian law of force from a larger plain to the ball point of the end of the mandible, strikes the temporal bone and surrounding labyrinth of the inner ear with a compounded force. Mandibular, maxillary, trigenisis nerves are all affected. Last summer the Regimental Surgeon of the U.S.Marines in Iraq contacted Mahercor Laboratories about a medical device now used in the NFL. This well known treatment for grinding, migraines and the such had never before been used for athletics. Dr Maher would be willing to discuss his patent pending theory with any interested parties. We now have several studies in the works, a military connection would be primary to the former army dentist. A Tufts head and neck specialist, Dr.Maher has been the team dentist for the Patriots for over twenty five years. The commissioner of the NFL has recently contacted Maher about his participation in a study on concussion, because the Patriots have the lowest concussion rate annually.
