how cruise ships are allowed to dump all of their trash wherever they please? I personally know commercial fishermen who have followed cruise ship trash trails for up to 40 miles off the coast of california.
now, obviously, any pollution in or into the ocean is harmful to everyone, but can"t we go after these huge multi-national tourist corporations before blaming individuals? doesn"t that seem more effective?

A trail of trash followed for forty miles? What cruise liner dumped a million tons of rubbish overboard?

I have been on three cruises and never seen them dump anything overboard. I have however watched them unload rubbish and such at each port they call at. I cannot speak for American cruise liners but don't believe they would deliberately pollute the seas either as their passengers would certainly not approve and make official complaints about it. The article mentions cigarette neds by the million. Filthy people on land throw their finished cancer sticks into the sea, as do fishermen at sea (a fire from a still alight cigarette end is not desired on a wooden fishing boat).

Boats sink and their cargo floats away, people throw stuff off of piers, boats (not ships), sewage and such is emptied into the sea, third world countries dump rubbish into the sea and so on. It mounts up over the DECADES. The main problem here does seem to be around America so maybe they should dispose of rubbish better?

In 14 years of travelling between Britain and France as well as visiting Belgium and Norway and Sweden by ship as well as some Canary Islands and Malta, as well as my cruises, I have never seen such areas of rubbish. Then again, I have never travelled by boat around America.

The one thing they forgot to mention is how to volunteer. I hate it when articles inspire me to do something good, but give no mention of follow through. Anyway, to volunteer for this years annual cleanup on September 15th check out OceanConservancy.org for details. (I tried to link directly, but this site won't let me.)
