How long is the warranty? Seagate Free Agent Drives have set the bar pretty high with a 5 yr warranty but this drive looks pretty durable.

Are they referring to a single platter or a single drive instead of a 2 drive volume? The last time I saw a company try to push the cutting edge with a single platter was the quantum 5 1/4 drives that died in droves the instant you turned them on. I didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to try that again. |

These disks have 4 or 5 platters depending on the manufacturer.
This is just for increasing the capacity. On my Raid-0, I have single-platter disks where only one face is used by the manufacturer - as a marketing option to reduce the capacity, or because the other face didn't work. Anyway, this is slightly better for the access time (less mobile arm+head mass) and for the sustained throughput (less jumps from one side to the other, needing to wait that the other head has found its track... One can't stabilize all heads at the same time, precision impossible). |
