First, I would like to say that intelligence is determind by the amount of brain divoted to it. As you can't expect a goat to pull a buggy, you can't expect half the brain to do the same amount of thinking.
So, I've come up with an equation which is able to give an animal an IQ. The equation is: I = s14. Where I is intelligence, s is brain size--in cubic centimeters--and fourteen is the number by which the brain size is devided. Humans have an average brain size of 1400 cc, and there IQ average is 100. Devide 1400 by 14, and you get 100. Late Homo Erectus had an average of 1200 cc, making their IQ average: 85. The normal rang was 75--95 A chimp's brain size is 400 cc, making it's average IQ: 28 (but i'll add a few points because of their size so its IQ's about 32). Wreather or not a chimp's brain has more grey metter than we do pruportionaly I do not know, but it's a start. -------------------- If we do not learn from our mistakes, there is no point in having them.

Einstein's Brain was smaller than average, though he had more Glial cells than most.
it's not the size, it's the number of connections. by your own formula, Elephants and Killer whales are 2 to 3 times an intelligent as humans. |

Birds and Octopi also appear to be much more inteligent than many other animals with the same brain size or larger.

beh. intelligence is not brain size. we don't use most of our brain potential anyhow. it's more about the concious awareness and ability to gain natural interest and therefore become informed.

as others have said, it isn't brain size that matters most. people with microencephaly (smaller than average skulls, and thus brains) do not have proportionally less IQ than normal people. In fact, they're only mildly retarded, less so than many other retarded people without microencephaly. btw, do you prefer intel or amd?

bah...actually theyve just discovered the gene that governs the building of a brain in humans...and also interestingly, its potential size...I also agree that the intelligence level depends on the number of neurons connecting bits of info - after all we grow a new one every time we learn something new....but then again - with more brain size, wouldn't there be more room for more connections? just a thought....

i dont have the link, but they (i love it when people say they, ts so vague) have done a study that listening to and playing music helps your brain make connections

possibly, or possibly there's just more space between the neurons so things work slower. obviously with only a few exceptions, creatures with bigger brains seem to be smarter than creatures with smaller brains. but the fact that they can teach a parrot colors, shapes, basic math and language seems to indicate that the connection isn't universal.

maybe birds would be smarter if we made them bigger? lets find out then, if a bird brain can do basic math, just think about a bird with a brain as big as an elephants, will solve the universe for us it will!!!

Ok, using this formula, sperm whales are actually the smartest creatures on the planet, with an average IQ of 557.14! It's amazing that they haven't overtaken us with their awesome technologies.

No one mentioned this, but the human brain would be a lot bigger if it wasn't folded, right? Can't someone come up with a surface area to IQ formula? I mean, barring any weird diseases (unless retardation is a disease).

I know Glial cells have a part in it. I also know that killer whales are more than 2 to 3 times bigger, making more brain needed to control the body. And as for the number of connections, where's the proof? -------------------- If we do not learn from our mistakes, there is no point in having them.

This theory predicts the number of IQ 100 cc makes, only 7 IQ points. In effect, someone with less brain size than average doesn't have that much less IQ. And what if there brain is more active than that of an average person? Their IQ would be even Higher, up to about 180. -------------------- If we do not learn from our mistakes, there is no point in having them.
