The fab machine first needs to be able to fab itself!
This would enable the exponential growth curve.

Any bacteria or plant is able to replicate. It could be easier to control such bacteria to make what we want than to reinvent all from scratch?
We are not able to control the life to make what we want. This shows that even with the genetic code we do not understand the life really.
Some day we will be able to control the life, like transform insects into robots, or control the shape and movements of living organism.
For the best and the worst. if we do not destroy ourself.

Later on we will be able to make things for temporary use, which can then be recycled at home to make new objects. I can imagine producing Duplo-size bricks for the small child, then remake them into smaller bricks and then ... who knows? Who will be the first person to come up with a reusable material?
