members of the breakaway Fundamentalist LDS cult
At first, I read this as "members of the breakaway Fundamentalist LSD cult" and thought, "Hmm, where do I sign up?"

Yeah, I believe in equal rights and equal treatment for women... but man! This is a good deal. A church that says I need three wives in order to get into heaven! That's some creationists I can understand. Now all I need to do is convince my wife.....

A bit more about the nasty culture the Fundamentalist LDS men have evolved.
Boy children would grow up to compete with the adult men for young wives. Therefore, boy children to not fare well. They are not educated to earn a living and evidently frequently are simply dumped from the culture.
I get the idea that this can mean that they are simly ejected from a father's vehicle on the streets of Salt Lake City, although that wasn't clearly stated.
The homes in Hillsdale and Colorado City are corporately owned by the FLDS church. They can only be leased; not purchased. Thus. if the ruling prophet doesn't like what any male says or does, they are ejected from their home.
I haven't read how young males manage to get accepted as breeder males. I guess that it's done by currying favor, freqeuently referred to as kissing ***.
As a cultural example in many ways, the cultures of Hillsdale and Colorado City are really the pits.

Yea, I also read it as LSD cult. I think that the retarded child was an anomaly, if he was the first one like that. I mean if the group is old, with the biological chances wouldn't it have eventually had an almost entire generation of people like this?

No, Hebrewhammer913, the girl child mentioned was not the first with the genetic deficiency, fumarole deficiency. As stated, her sister also had the defect.
It has been stated that children with the defect have physical characteristics which can be recognized on sight.
One man, evidently one who was ejected from his community (possibly for having a working mind and an inability to conceal his opnions) described watching a very young child having a bad seizure. He said the child's back arched backward so that its heels were almost touching its head. He said the mother knew of nothing to do other that stroking the child.
Also, recall that I mentioned that the fact that there was such a recurring condition as fumarole deficiency in the populace was hidden from the FLDS hoi polloi for years.

This conversation is mormonic( hahaha). There is no genetic evidence that cousin inbreeding has any genetic anomalies. Look it up for real, see for yourself.

We are all the products of inbreeding. Historically, populations where much smaller. It can only be assumed that if a community has a small population that inbreeding is inevitable. Tragically even though this is no longer needed wako cults don't get enough new genetic material to prevent it... e.g. not enough people crazy enough to join them, the only people crazy enough to be a part of this are the people that where raised into it and know no different.

QUOTE (CactusCritter+Jan 23 2006, 08:42 AM) http://www.physorg.com/news10044.html The Dec 29, 2005 - Jan 4, 2006 issue of a freebie tabloid distributed in Metropolitan Phoenix AZ (New Times) contains a sad article, "Forbidden Fruit" about the consequences of inbreeding among the polygamists, members of the breakaway Fundamentalist LDS cult who live in two towns along the Arizona-Utah border (Colorado City AZ and Hilldale UT). About half of the 8000 people who live in the two towns are descendants of two of the founding families who settled there in 1930. About 15 years ago, a Phoenix doctor was asked to look at a strange-looking child suffering from severe physical maladies and acute retardation. He sent urine samples to a U of Colorado professor of pediatrics who runs a laboratory that detects rare genetic diseases. It was determined that the child (and later, that a sister) had a previously very rare condidtion called fumarole deficiency. It yields severely damaged babies who may have parts of their brain missing, are likely to have severe seizures, and in general fail to mature, frequently being quite helpless. The parents are thoroughly conditioned; men must have at least three wives in order to get into Heaven and women must have as many babies as possible to increase the size of the cult. I"ll provide more details, if requested, about the social millieu and the indifference of the cult members, from whom the information about the deficiency was originally hidden, to accepting any advice about what to do about the tragic situation. The prophet who governed the two towns is being sought on criminal charges by the FBI and is known to have set up a settlement in Eldorado Mexico to which the Colorado City and Hilldale folks are expected to migrate. The cultists themselves do not permit outsiders to join and do not believe what outsiders tell them. Imbreeding hey? When Adam and Eve's kids were having sex with eachother, I wonder what happened? Oh, and after the flood? Two of each kind of animal? This means all land animals and birds should also have only a few thousand years history and should have all been imbred worst then in this article here. But about that cult. I think that FBI should take down ALL cult leaders. False advertising is illegal, isn't it!? Well then, down with cults! | QUOTE | "Bible Thumpers Cousin Humpers". Lol.

Hi Your fellow human,
"Imbreeding hey? When Adam and Eve's kids were having sex with eachother, I wonder what happened? Oh, and after the flood? Two of each kind of animal? Minor cavil; its "inbreeding" not "imbreeding", of course.
I can't provide a citation, but in the past I have seen mention of the matter of the mating stock of Cain and Able ascribed to yet another tribe not mentioned in Genesis. Obviously, there had to be an additional creation of humans if one insists that Genesis is true.
On the other hand, one cannot expect logical coherence in mythological tales such as Genesis and The Flood..
The matter has been discussed many times even, IIRC, being cited in the infamous Stokes Trial in Tennessee in the '20s, IIRC. I think that it was shrugged off there.
Inbreeding, BTW, could would not be a negative thing, ignoring the ethics, if the original population's genomes contained no recessive genes, but as demonstrated tragically by the FLDS folks, lack of recessives is unlikely and can be overturned at any generation by mutations.
"But about that cult. I think that FBI should take down ALL cult leaders. False advertising is illegal, isn't it!? Well then, down with cults!"
Much easier said than done, of course. Cults are always religously based, no matter how illogical that base. Consider the Railians (sp?), the cult from France which claims off-planet aliens as having controlled human development.
False advertising, of course, applies only to matters of commerce. Freedom of speech rules in religion so long as it does not mandate felonious matters.
But, yet, down with cults, even if it would destroy the livelihood of the cult deprogrammer business.
If the population was kept isolated, how long would it take before all the recessive mutations where removed? Assuming none of the mutants breed (possibly an incorrect assumption considering the FLDS's "ethics"), wouldn't most of the harmful recessives be removed after 10 generations or so? With an initial population that is so small, maybe we could have a new species of human. They would be slightly less intelligent, but perfectly adapted to life in a cult.
We can’t get rid of cults. Imagine a world without Do (Marshall Herff Applewhite) and David Koresh.

Hi Thomas the Gardener,
Recessive genes tend to be difficult to remove from a population. Until two people breed that carry that gene, there will be no macro evidence of its presence. Thus, a recessive gene can last indefinitely unless it becomes so widespread that any mating will yield a descendant with two recessives in which case the population will die out with something like the fumarase deficiency gene universally present.
According to the article I used for my original posting, supposedly genetic research has yet to identify the defective gene.
I can't help comparing the indifferent inbreeding demonstrated by the FLDS folks as compared to Jewish couples of whom I have read who refuse to have babies when they know that both have the lethal Tay-Sacks gene.
